4th Grade Reading

Welcome to 4th grade!  My name is Betsy Burcham, and I currently teach 4th grade reading. I have loved my experiences working at East Ridge Elementary and with this grade-level. I love teaching AND learning with my students as we make our way through the year. I think learning should be fun and relatable to students’ real, daily life experiences. I try my best to plan exciting, hands-on learning opportunities that make my students enthusiastic about their education as well as encouraging them to be problem-solvers who make the world a better place. Now, this doesn’t mean that school is all fun and games. We work hard in class, and I expect all students to consistently give their 100% best effort. In return, I promise to work my hardest to make learning meaningful and engaging for all students.

Let me tell you a little about myself. I grew up in Palm Bay, Florida, where I attended Covenant Christian School from kindergarten all the way to 12th grade. After graduating high school, I moved to Saint Augustine, Florida, to attend Flagler College. I graduated from Flagler in April of 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I moved to Chattanooga just 3 months after graduating because I got this incredible job teaching 4th grade at East Ridge Elementary!

My expectations for my students:

  • We come in ready to work hard. We don’t do EASY work in our room. We do HARD work that stretches and grows our brains. When things get tough (which they probably will), we keep a growth mindset and NEVER give up.
  • We are proactive. We make our own choices and accept the consequences that go along with them.
  • We are respectful to each other. This includes classmates, other students in the building, and other adults in the building.
  • We actively participate in our own education.  Teachers cannot put knowledge into our heads- WE must work at learning too.
  • We are leaders who learn about and work on living out the 7 Habits.
